Record

The Record Precision Watch company was formed in the early 1900s,and continued to produce watches until purchased by longines in the early 60's.

Before WWII, Record sold watches to Germany under contract. It is believed that this continued during the war ---while Record   was either supplying, or attempting to supply watches to the Allied countries.

WWII

In 1938 the British were already preparing for war. In their rush the British Ministry of Defense solicited proposals for WWW* & timers/pocket watches. As long as the basic specs were met, there were no SPECIFIC PATTERNS to be complied with.

[That is why we find **G.S.T.P. on most pocket/deck watches and timers]

*Watch-Wristlet-Waterproof
**General Service Temporary Pattern

Record Watch Co was one of 12 companies submitting complying designs,

To comply with the process, Record upgraded there 15 jewel movements.

A few upgrades were:

1- Breguet-curved hairsprings with screwed alloy rather than a steel balances provided better temperature control and less chance of breakage;

2-Shock absorbers for balances;

3- And finally, when major companies, including Omega, Longines and General watch company, began producing critical high demand center sweep second hand movements by hacking existing movements, Record followed suit.

CENTER SWEEP

By 1942, the sweep second hand watch had became "the" watch. Two of the major reasons were the Government issued U.S.A. A-11 hacking sweep seconds pilots watch and the sweep seconds watches in demand by Doctors, Medics and Nurses . The sweep second watch simply made the watch more than an instrument to "tell time"....

The sub-second style dial, with a tiny second hand rotating around a tiny seconds register at the 6 position, was difficult to utilize for timing events. In most cases it was ignored. On the other hand, a sweep second hand could be used to time events, mark events, and was easier to read .

THE DESIGN

So, what did Record and other manufacturers do?

Did they re-tool and re-design new movements? NO!

They simply placed a hollow canon pinion that allowed a wheeled center shaft to protrude through the dial, mounted a second hand to it, and ran the combo with the very sub-seconds wheel they were eliminating...

AASCOKIMG_4195.jpg (67850 bytes)

Instead of the drive train turning the dial protruding shaft/pinion at 6 position connected to the tiny second hand, they mounted a large brass/alloy wheel on the opposite side of the shaft that now protruded through the bridge. That wheel turned a wheel on top of a NEW center "shaft' held in position be a new this jeweled bridge that went through a new HOLLOW center cannon pinion in the center of the movement that then protruded through the center of the dial where a new long ***sweep second hand attached.

***sweep second hand
technically, "sweep" usually means rotating round without TICKS. In other words, smoothly rather than "ticking" by second round. In this write up, we are using sweep in a general way to better explain our history and science. It made no difference whether it was ticks or moves smooth, the idea being that one had a large second hand that went round in tune with the movement and the chapter ring so one could count, time & now even synchronize.
